How this area and its evidence are assembled
Geography and privacy
This fixed geographic cell groups nearby public reports using generalized locations. It does not define a biological colony, exact animal locations, or distinct animals. Changing the map viewport does not change this area.
Dates and reporting activity
Observation days use Hawaiʻi time. This dated source excludes reports with an unknown observation date. Direct area links start at January 1, 1900 and run through today; map links preserve the selected period. Chart totals cover the selected reports before timeline pagination.
Presence and counts
Live presence uses sightings and surveys without zero detection, separately for each species. A missing count does not negate a reported sighting. Signs, feeding records, mortality and unclassified older records stay separate. The count gauge compares recorded and absent counts among eligible records; it does not measure accuracy, observation effort or survey completeness.
Coverage limits
When source coverage is partial, summaries describe only loaded reports. More timeline pages alone do not mean source coverage is partial. Multiple reports may describe the same animals; counts must not be added into a population estimate. Research references and optional place names are separate from these field observations.
