Coqui frog in Hawaiʻi
Eleutherodactylus coqui
Coqui frogs arrived from Puerto Rico around 1988. They are about the size of a quarter, are heard mainly at night. They are established on Hawaiʻi Island, and the state works to keep them from spreading to uninfected islands.
What to report
- Frogs heard calling at night, with the time and how many voices.
- A frog seen in nursery plants, potted material or a new place.
Not this
- A frog that does not make the loud two-note “ko-KEE” call may be another species; a recording helps.
