Goats in Hawaiʻi

Capra hircus

Feral goats strip plants from dry slopes and cliffs and leave bare ground behind. They are hunted as game animals under DOFAW rules. FeralMap records where people see them, so repeat reports show which slopes and gulches they use.

What to report

  • Goats seen on slopes, cliffs, roadsides or in gulches, with a count.
  • Browse lines and bare ground where goats gather.
  • Goats near native plant restoration sites or fenced areas.

Not this

  • Domestic goats behind a fence or tethered are livestock, not feral goats.
  • Axis deer: goats and mouflon sheep are often mistaken for deer, and the other way round. Deer have spotted coats and antlers, not horns.

A report is one observation at one place and time. It is not a count of animals and not an estimate of how many live there.

Common questions

Can DOFAW remove goats from my land?
DOFAW says it cannot conduct animal control on private property. FeralMap only records what you saw.
