Coconut rhinoceros beetle in Hawaiʻi
Oryctes rhinoceros
Coconut rhinoceros beetles bore into the crowns of coconut and other palms. The beetle was first detected on Oʻahu in December 2013 and has since been found on other islands. It has a dedicated response team, CRB Response, which asks for reports from every island except Oʻahu.
What to report
- An adult beetle: large and dark, with a single horn.
- Large white grubs in mulch, compost or green waste.
- Palm fronds with V-shaped cuts or holes bored through the midrib.
Not this
- Other large beetles without a horn; if you are unsure, CRB Response offers identification help.
A report is one observation at one place and time. It is not a count of animals and not an estimate of how many live there.
