Rose-ringed parakeet in Hawaiʻi
Psittacula krameri
Rose-ringed parakeets were brought to Hawaiʻi as pets. On Oʻahu and Kauaʻi their numbers have grown past the point where removal is possible, and on Kauaʻi they have been estimated to cost small farms about 10% of their crops. They are not known to be present on Maui or Hawaiʻi Island.
What to report
- Roost sites at dusk, with a rough count.
- Flocks feeding in crops or orchards.
- Parakeets on islands where you have not seen them before.
Not this
- Another parrot or an escaped pet bird: a photo helps confirm the species.
